Why Executive Function Skills Matter

Executive function is a set of cognitive skills that help us get through our day. These mental processes enable us to plan, focus attention, organize, remember information, and complete tasks. Executive function is rooted in the prefrontal cortex—the area of the brain responsible for decision-making and self-regulation. Notably, the prefrontal cortex is the last part of the brain to fully develop, typically maturing around age 25—and often even later for individuals with ADHD.

It’s no wonder that children often struggle with everyday tasks like following directions, starting and finishing assignments, staying organized, or managing big emotions. These challenges are not about motivation or intelligence—they’re often rooted in underdeveloped executive function skills. When executive function is weak, it can impact every part of a child’s life: their performance in school, their behavior at home, and their confidence in social situations.

At the core of executive functioning are eight key skills:

  • Impulse Control – Thinking before acting
  • Emotional Control – Managing emotions to respond appropriately
  • Flexible Thinking – Adapting to new situations and perspectives
  • Working Memory – Holding and using information in the moment
  • Self-Monitoring – Recognizing and evaluating one’s own performance
  • Planning and Prioritizing – Setting goals and determining what matters most
  • Task Initiation – Starting tasks without excessive procrastination
  • Organization – Keeping track of information and materials
