What is executive function?

Executive function is a set of cognitive skills that help us get through our day. These mental processes enable us to plan, focus attention, organize, remember, and perform tasks. It is located in the prefrontal cortex part of the brain which is the last part of the brian to fully develop. In fact, the prefrontal cortex doesn’t fully develop until around the age of 25 and even longer for people with ADHD.

It’s no wonder that kids in general have difficulty doing everyday tasks like following directions, starting and completing tasks, managing feelings, and deciding what to do first. When kids struggle with executive function, it impacts them at home, school, and in life. There are eight key Executive functions:
